The owner possessed some of the furniture already, and other pieces were found by Robert Kime, who also supplied many of the textiles – curtains, for example, in ‘French Linen’, a pattern of muted garden flowers, a sofa covered in cream ‘Drugget’, another in a dark ‘Chenille Stripe’.

The dining room has been given a darker treatment: it is hung with a hand-blocked damask wallpaper by Robert Kime. Off the dining room is the kitchen, which is large and light, with traditional-style cupboards providing lots of storage space. The kitchen floor is made of thirty-centimetre-wide floorboards cut from a single tree bought specially for the purpose. A sofa, covered in a warm-coloured linen based on Danish mattress ticking by Robert Kime, and silk curtains add com-fort. On the terrace outside the dining room and kitchen, a tall iron pergola has been planted with roses and honeysuckle to provide a shady outside eating area. Pleached limes grow against the wall.

Up the sweeping staircase the central landing leads, on one side, into the main bedroom. Robert Kime made the bed as well as the hangings from one of his own fabrics, ‘Ashoka Panel’, adapted from the design of a Mogul textile, which he lined with antique French fabric. On the other side of the landing are further bedrooms, with a self-contained flat beyond.

The whole is well proportioned and practical –the culmination of years of planning and hard work. The only drawback at present is the lack of storage space, so there are provisional plans to build a large cellar, and possibly a gatehouse somewhere else in the garden.

Perhaps the last word should go to Robert Kime: ‘The owner had some strong visual ideas, which made it an interesting commission. Although there are some surprises, if you just go with it, you find it a very persuasive house’.
