This glamorous, art and colour-filled hotel is one of New York's newest addresses from the unstoppable Kit Kemp and her daughters Minnie and Willow – the visionaries behind Firmdale Hotels. Situated in the vibrant Tribeca neighbourhood, you feel firmly in New York, helped by the fact that locals are making it their own too.

Design notes

The interiors exude all the colour, pattern and sense of fun we have come to expect from Kit Kemp. Together with her husband Tim, they have bought a parking lot and built the hotel from the ground up. Even from the outside, there is nothing shy or retiring. Nick Hamdy, the general manager, shows me an iPhone photo taken from the One World Observatory, that shows the landmark they have created with its turquoise blue facade and bright yellow top. Inside, everywhere you look is a feast for the eyes. Specially commissioned pieces by Kit’s favourite artists or clever finds (there are over 800 works of art in total) sit alongside fabrics and wallpapers from her own collaborations, making for interiors that are interesting, eclectic, dynamic and never dull.

Why stay here

It’s full of life and soul and deeply comfortable. I could have stayed for weeks in what felt like our own little light-filled apartment, with its marble-clad bathroom, fabric-lined bedroom and dressing area and sitting room complete with a record player. It's also ideally located: Tribeca is a vibrant, arty neighbourhood, sandwiched between the Financial District and Soho and characterised by cobbled streets and old warehouse buildings, with lots of art galleries and restaurants on the doorstep.

Rooms and facilities

Each of the 69 bedrooms and suites is individually designed. As the building was designed specifically to be a hotel, there is no second rate room. Even the smaller rooms are graced with wonderful floor to ceiling windows that fill the space with light and have views of lower Manhattan’s skyscrapers. Many of the suites or residencies (where you can stay for longer periods of time) have sitting rooms with a small ‘kitchen’ in a cupboard and a hob where you could, if you so wished, boil some pasta or soup. Some of the rooms have garden terraces too. There isn’t a gym or spa, but guests have access to the gym across the road durning their stay.

Food and drink

An all-day restaurant serves brasserie-style food and ensures you can fit eating around everything else you are trying to achieve during your stay. If you want to get away from the main hubbub there is also a cosy drawing room where you can read a book, have a drink or dine.

Family friendly

Many of the rooms can also interconnect with their neighbour should you need it, making this an ideal place to stay with children or friends.
