When they moved into their new house, Dan and Sophie's kitchen looked dated and neglected. They transformed the room completely, removing a bathroom at the back and adding an extension which almost doubled its size. It is now a light-filled, contemporary space...

'Our aim was to bring a more industrial minimalist feel in the kitchen area,' explains Dan. The palette was kept clean and fresh with white walls, grey stone floor tiles and simple modern 'Soho' units from Benchmarx. The work surfaces are a natural quartz, 'Lyra' from Silestone. Lahart Shelving created shelves to fit as an extension to the kitchen cupboards, the perfect home for cookbooks.

Behind the kitchen counter a bright open area has been created for entertaining. This is furnished with a small grey 'Holly' sofa from Sofa.com, the perfect place to relax with a glass of wine. Above it hangs a painting of yellow irises by Sophie's school friend Sophie Newnham.
In the far corner by french windows leading to the garden Sophie has arranged clustered pot plants and a vintage rattan peacock chair. Woven plastic bucket chairs bought from second-hand furniture shop Stirling & Sons on the Harrow Road provide extra party seating and continue the '70s theme. When the couple have friends over they light the tall hurricane lanterns and the space is transformed into a cosy candlelit den.
With many thanks to Michael Newington Gray for the photography. See**his work at michaelnewingtongray.com.
